TASK 1 (FINAL)

Posted: October 30, 2012 in Graphic Design (Print)

Below is my final piece for task 1 of Graphic Design. As mentioned in previous posts, I have altered the type within the spray can, eliminating the “rivers” between words and changed the background colour to white. I also changed the colour and texture of the spray pattern and enlarged the phrase “One Man’s Art May Be Another’s Trash”. I am pleased with my final piece and feel it portrays my research topic successfully.

SQUARE COLLAGE (FINAL)

Posted: October 30, 2012 in Graphic Design (Print)

Displayed below is my final design with the word DELUSION incorporated within it. I am happy with the overall result and particularly like the typeface, as it portrays a deluded feel.

Now with my word chosen, I am beginning to incorporate DELUSION within my design. Below are a number of examples of experimental work:

DISCOVERING TYPE

Posted: October 30, 2012 in Graphic Design (Print)

Now that DELUSION is my word of focus, I am going to look at a variety of different typefaces and see if any could potentially suit my collage of images. I want the type to have a distorted feel giving a sense of delusion; a misconception of reality.

Displayed below is my square collage with all of my images selected:

I will now make a list of words that relates to my final image (displayed below). Once I have an extensive set of words, I will begin to select the words that are the most interesting when combined with the collage. I will also experiment with a number of typefaces that suit the content. I will then select one word that I think best portrays the whole image; so when you read the word, you instantly know the story/connection within the images.

spooky, disturbing, disturbed, frightening, unnerving, mysterious, eerie, scary, haunted, troubled, distressed, possessed, influenced, crazed, obsessed, obsession, mad, death, murder, murderer, assassin, slayer, slaughter, execution, killer, hurt, harm, damage, intent, beat, smash, ghost, monster, night, dark, evil, criminal, malicious, immoral, sin, wrong, devil, heaven, hell, grave, decompose, decay, rot, crumble, loss, depart, end, satisfaction, fulfilment, contentment, pleasure, desire, addiction, compulsion, urge, impulse, habit, need, craving, domination, power, overcome, conquer, defeat, triumph, authority, control, supremacy, inadequacy, abuse, neglect, suffer, abandonment, alone, delusion, deluded, mistake.

Words I like:

  • Disturbed
  • Troubled
  • Possessed
  • Obsession
  • Decompose
  • Crumble
  • Satisfaction
  • Compulsion
  • Domination
  • Supremacy
  • Inadequacy
  • Neglect
  • Abandonment
  • Delusion

I still have a large collection of words, so to reduce the number, I thought it would be a good idea to research the definition for the one’s of interest.

  1. Delusion – an idiosyncratic belief or impression maintained despite being contradicted by reality or rational argument, typically as a symptom of mental disorder; the delusion of being watched.
  2. Inadequacy –  inability to deal with a situation or with life; her feelings of personal inadequacy.
  3. Compulsion – the action or state of forcing or being forced to do something; constraint ; the payment was made under compulsion OR an irresistible urge to behave in a certain way; he felt a compulsion to babble on about what had happened.
  4. Supremacy – the state or condition of being superior to all others in authority, power, or status; the supremacy of the king.
  5. Possessed – (of a person) completely controlled by an evil spirit; she ran like a possessed person.

WORD OF CHOICEDELUSION

Below is another square collage which includes a number of my class mates edits.

Within the collage, I still wanted to contain a “creepy/eerie” feel, so when selecting and experimenting with other class mates samples, it was difficult as the majority were focusing on a different topic. I only like one of the above images, which is displayed below. I will include this image within my final collage and replace one of my original photographs.

Class mate – Marcus Kirk

Author/Piece Name – Space-man2

I also really liked the image displayed below, however, when incorporated within the collage, it made the whole piece too dark.

Class mate – Adam McConnell

Author/Piece Name – Couple With A Young Female Spirit

I submitted my final design for task 1 (see post FINAL DESIGN, October 18th). Following feedback, I am now going to develop this idea further and improve the concept. Firstly, I am going to change the type that makes up the spray can. The can is still going to portray the same phrase but I want to eliminate the “rivers” that flow between the words. Below are two attempts. I am particularly fond of the second idea.

SQUARE COLLAGE

Posted: October 21, 2012 in Graphic Design (Print)

Displayed below is my square collage that I created. I have selected a horror/eerie theme.

For task 2 within this module, we have been asked to find 9 images that we find visually interesting using Flickr. Using Photoshop we must then create a 3 x 3 inch square and select a particular section of each image. The images can be connected with a theme or just chosen at random. We will then create a square college, containing all 9 squares. When using Flickr, we must consider copyright and check that permission from the creator is granted. Below are the 9 images I have selected. I have acknowledged the artist’s name for each piece.

FINAL DESIGN

Posted: October 18, 2012 in Graphic Design (Print)

Below is my final design. Graffiti may always carry a dark side and be seen as an act of vandalism which is represented by the black background and the phrase “One man’s art may be another’s trash”. In my opinion, Graffiti is a thing of beauty, as this is represented by the phrase “It has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and the vibrant and expressive swirls of red and yellow.
